Into the green

This weekend we were planning a couple of deep dives, the Rinovia and the Kennedies, off of Shaun's boat Redeemer. We left the quay at 10am and set off. There was a combination of rebreathers and open circuit divers on board, all of which had very different dive plans and deco schedules. The last time I dived the Rinovia I had a maximum depth of 58.5m on low water, and that was at the bottom. The sounder was showing 60m, a little deeper than I had planned.

The Spital was a steamship carrying coal and an unspecified cargo. It weighed in at 4718 tons and measured 119m long, this was a decent size ship. It was torpedoed by U-93 on the 5th of January 1918 and now lies about 4 miles S.S.E. of St Anthony Head. The co-ordinates on the map are an estimate, as I do not have the exact co-ordinates.

Today was time for another mix dive, this time it would be the Lady of the Isle. She lies 3 miles off the Cornish coast around 7 miles out of Falmouth, in about 55m of water.

It was a glorious sunny day and the sea was as flat as you could want. There were just 6 of us on Shaun's boat 'Redeemer', 3 with rebreathers and 3 of us with open circuit. The dive had been planned, two 12 litre cylinders ful of trimix on my back and a 5 litre of oxygen rich gas under each arm. This would give me more than enough gas for a 30 minute bottom time and 40 minutes of accelerated decompression.

The weekend was originally planned on Autumn Dream, but due to circumstances he arranged for us to be on Gary Fox's 'Cornish ***'. We left Falmouth at a reasonable time of 10:30 on Saturday and headed out to the first days site, the HMS Eskdale, an 80m long Hunt Class destroyer sunk in 1942. It was an hour out, so plenty of time to get ready in the glorious sunshine and on flat seas. A mixture of CCR and OC divers with varying run times completed their pre-dive routines, mine was eating the chocolate digestives Gary (Fox) had put out for us .
